Piotr Szulc

1890

Piotr Szulc lived in Lomazy at least until 1854, when his first son Marcin was born. It is not clear when Marianna, his first wife died, but rather after giving birth to the two next daughters Anna in 1857 and Zofia in about 1860. Anna was born in Rossosz, so Piotr and his family resided in this town in 1857. According to Dr. Dariusz Tarasiuk, the historian of Wisznice and author of a study entitled "Wisznice. Dzieje miasteczka i okolic do 1918 roku", Lublin – Wisznice 2006 (Wisznice, history of the town and its surroundings), on June 20, 1866 Piotr Szulc signed a lease on the land formerly belonging to the parish church in Wisznice possibly excluding the church farm in Lyniew. He moved to Lyniew in 1868, because this village is listed in the death certificate of his 6 months old daughter Aleksandra. Documents list Piotr Szulc in 1866 and in 1870 as an owner of the lease on the brewery on the manorial farm in Lyniew. In 1874 Piotr Szulc married his 17 years old daughter Anna to Wojciech Tarkowski age 30, the son of Magadalena Ziolkowska, the daughter of the owners of the manorial farm in Lyniew. In 1885, Piotr Szulc is listed as an owner of the Lyniew manorial farm and a brewery. The brewery that at some point passed to his son Aleksander was destroyed by arson in the 1930s.

Piotr Szulc’s mother, Marianna Apolonia Szulc nee Bedenak lived with him, because she died in Lyniew on September 4, 1875 and is listed as a widow, parents unknown. She belonged to the Greek-Catholic (Uniate) Church, because the Roman-Catholic parish priest in Wisznice was fined for arranging her funeral.

Marcin Szulc, the first son of Piotr lived with him first in Lomazy then in Rossosz and finally in Lyniew. In 1875 at age 23 Marcin owned land in Lyniew. Ten years later in 1885 Marcin listed as a brewer residing in Warsaw when he was the godfather of his niece Helena Praska, daughter of his sister Zofia Praska nee Szulc. It is possible that he lived in Warsaw around 1880 and that his sister lived with him. This could explain how Wladyslaw Wincenty Praski born just outside Czestochowa and residing in Warsaw at least since 1869 met his future wife Zofia. Marcin Szulc lived in Warsaw at least until 1886 when his son Waclaw was baptized in the Holy Cross church.

Nine years later Marcin Szulc lived in Brzesc nad Bugiem (Brest-Litowsk) and owner a brewery there, as noted in the death certificate of Wladyslaw Wincenty Praski, his brother-in-law. He owner a hotel in Warsaw, because the second witness of this certificate Wladyslaw Tomaszewski is mentioned as the manager of this hotel. Some time later Marcin Szulc moved to Grabanow, a manorial farm with a nice palace just north of Biala Podlaska, close to his birthplace in Lomazy. Marcin died in Russia during the Spanish flu epidemics in 1918. It not clear, if Marcin was close to his father Piotr and his half-brother Aleksander, because pictures of him and his family do not show his father. Marcin’s descendants did not remember about their roots in Lomazy and were not close to their cousins in Lyniew. On the other hand, Marcin was close to his sister Zofia and her family. Zofia’s granddaughter Janina Praska remembered visiting Grabanow several times. Marcin’s family had close ties to his younger half-sister Maria Szummer nee Szulc (name at birth Feliksa Marianna) that resided in Sarnaki.

Several monuments of the Szulc family are in the cemetery in Wisznice, Poland. Stefania Kurowska nee Szulc, grandaughter of Piotr and daughter of Aleksander as well as her family are taking care of these monuments.
